Three dead in overnight road accidents
Police say they will not release the name of the 21-year-old man killed when the car he was a passenger in crashed into a fence in the Wellington suburb of Northland early today until all next of kin have been notified.
Detective Sergeant John van den Heuvel of Wellington CIB said the 19-year-old driver of the Mazda 323 lost control of the car and crashed into a roadside fence on Raroa Crescent around 4am today.
The car was carrying four passengers and the 21-year-old rear seat passenger died instantly.
Mr van den Heuvel said two female passengers aged 15 and 17 were taken to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries. The driver and a front seat passenger suffered only minor injuries.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash which closed the road for approximately four hours but said no other vehicles were involved and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
An adult and a child died when a ute hit a bridge near Greenfield, north west of Balclutha in Otago.
Another child is in critical condition in Dunedin Hospital.
The adult and child died at the scene of the accident at around midnight Sunday, Inspector John Doherty said.
There were five people in the car, three children and two adults, the other adult and child were uninjured.
