German woman killed in crash

A 27-year-old German woman is dead and her two German friends were injured in a car crash on the West Coast today, police say.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the Haast Highway, about 40km southwest of Fox Glacier, at 12.51pm.

The woman who died was a passenger in a car that left the road and hit a tree, Constable Paul Gurney of Franz Joseph police said.

The 18-year-old driver and a 25-year-old passenger were hospitalised with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.

It was understood the three women had been in New Zealand since November on temporary working visas, Mr Gurney said.

Police were trying to reach the 27-year-old's next of kin in Germany and her name would not be released until they had been contacted.
