Teen hospitalised after falling 20m

A 14-year-old boy is in a stable condition after plunging 20 metres at an inner-city Auckland mall, after allegedly trying to run from security staff last week.

The teenage boy was taken to Auckland's Starship Hospital with serious injuries after the incident at Auckland's Westfield Downtown Mall.

Auckland District Health Board spokesman Matthew Rogers said the teen remained in hospital.

It was alleged the teenager took the sneakers from The Warehouse and was being spoken to by the store's security staff when he leapt over a railing, falling two storeys.

An Auckland city police spokeswoman said police had visited the teenager in hospital but had not formally interviewed him as he did not have an adult present.

The spokeswoman said the matter had been referred to Mangere Youth Aid.
