TRUST ME: Victoria Cross winner Corporal Willie Apiata has been judged the most trusted New Zealand of 2008 by Reader's Digest magazine.

Victoria Cross winner and Special Air Services soldier Corporal Willie Apiata is New Zealand's most trusted person for 2008.

Reader's Digest had not planned to reveal its list of the country's most trusted until Tuesday but its own website pre-empted the announcement by showing the cover of its next issue which included a photograph of Apiata and the question: "Who do we trust?"

The New Zealand Herald said the cover was on the website on Thursday night but withdrawn by midday yesterday.

The magazine may have withdrawn the cover featuring Apiata but it did not withdraw the first three names on the list of must trusted people in New Zealand in 2008.

Apiata at number one was followed by scientist and Olympic legend Peter Snell and All Blacks rugby legend Colin Meads.

Last year Snell was listed at number three behind Sir Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and children's author Margaret Mahey.

Colin Meads was number 15 on the list last year.
