Police have charged Wanganui man Karl James Copley Lane with the murder of Nadine Timmins, who died after she was shot in the head on the weekend.

Palmerston North detective Dennis O'Rourke said police located Lane, in the central North Island around 1pm today. His silver Commodore was also found.

Police are now interviewing Lane at Turangi.

Timmis, 24, died in Wanganui Hospital on Sunday after being shot in a car on Kowhai St, in the suburb of Castlecliff, on Saturday night.

The critically injured woman was found in the car on Liverpool Street by a police patrol shortly after midnight.  A post-mortem today found Ms Timmins was shot once in head.

Police said they were hunting 29-year-old Lane in connection with the shooting.

He was described as Caucasian, 165cm tall, of medium build and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a dark sweatshirt and a camouflage beanie.  He was believed to be driving a silver 1990 Holden Commodore, with the registration number PS413.

Police warned the public not to approach Lane as he was considered armed and dangerous.

Earlier today Detective Sergeant Kevin Anstis told a media conference Lane was known to be a keen hunter and there was a possibility he may have "gone bush".

Anstis said there had been a helicopter searching rural areas around Wanganui in an effort to find the car.

Ms Timmins was survived by her two children, aged four and six-years-old – who are being looked after by members of her family.
