PATERNAL PLEASURE: Christchurch father Donald Pettit shares a playful moment with his eight-month-old son, Lenny. He welcomes the publication of a free magazine especially for new fathers.

New fathers will get a guidebook in a move to make them feel more involved with their new bundle of joy.

The Father & Child magazine will be given to new fathers in Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin hospitals as part of a birth pack for parents.

It is full of men's birth stories and information about ways in which children learn from their fathers.

Christchurch father Donald Pettit said a lot of focus was placed on the mother and baby when a child was born.

No matter how involved a man was with the birth, he was sometimes sidelined during the early months of the child's life.

"This magazine would make dads feel included. It's important to feel this is an important time for fathers, as so much of the focus seems to be the other members of the family."

Pettit has an eight-month-old son, Lenny, and an eight-year-old daughter, Phoebe.

He said he felt a bit dazed, and amazed, after the births of both his children and would have been delighted to receive a book that welcomed him into the fraternity of fathers.

Although he and his wife received an information pack after Lenny's birth, it contained nothing for a man.

"I looked through it and there was breast-feeding stuff and nappies and all these things, but nothing I really felt was meant for me."

The Father & Child Trust publishes the book and spokesman Harald Breiding-Buss said the trust hoped the magazine would eventually be handed out in hospitals nationwide. It was expected the magazine would reach 90 per cent of new fathers in the three current locations.

"Rather than doubling up on parenting and baby-care information which is provided elsewhere in the birth pack, the magazine aims to make fathers feel like being equal partners in parenting and raising children," Breiding-Buss said.

Fantastic!! Great to see Fathers being acknowledged! This can only be a positive for the Families in our nation!

Acknowledging fathers: a long slow road. When we had our first child, back in 1975, I had to ask permission to be at the birth - yup, here in NZ. The fact that it's taken another 33 years for a magazine for fathers to appear hardly surprises me.

I think its a great idea too.

Maybe they should be obtainable to parents in other parts of the country too by calling an 0800 # or something?

:)

About time someone got out there and did something for the Dad's.

Hopefully it will be available in all regions of New Zealand in the near future. Dad's play such a huge part in the birth of a new baby and sadly yes they do get sidelined, hopefully this will make them feel that more involved and attached to the process. I also believe there needs to be more support and awareness of depression in new Fathers too as this is overlooked terribly.

It's not only the mother going through the transition of birth and new additions, Dad's do suffer too, and unfortunately it does not occur to a lot of people that they are suffering.

Anyway Good luck with this magazine

Well overdue and an area where we lack much support including young dads.

I recently took a six-month break to be a home-dad to my 3 year old and what did I discover. It's a mum's world out there folks. I was outnumbered by 40-1 sometimes. My daughter was distraught that she was the only child missing a mother.

saying that I just wished other dads could enjoy time off, even if it was the odd lunchtime to have time with their babies.

I think this is a awesome idea... But like post #1 said, what about us in Auckland? I am about to become a Dad and I would like to have one of these packs but I won't be getting one because it is not in Auckland which I think is very strange not to have this in Auckland as well...

I'm amused by Mr Pettit's statement that information about nappies isn't meant for fathers! Slip of the tongue, I hope.
