The death of a newborn baby at a rural Bay of Plenty property has sparked a police investigation.

Senior Sergeant Robert Glencross, of Tauranga police, said the death occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning at a property near Te Puke.

"Police are speaking with members of the family of the baby, who are co-operating fully with police inquiries," Mr Glencross said.

A post-mortem would be carried out in Auckland tomorrow and police would continue to interview witnesses. Environmental Science and Research scientists would carry out a scene examination over the next two days.

Mr Glencross refused to comment further.
