Police in Northland are hunting for the driver of a vehicle who failed to stop after striking and killing a cyclist this morning.
Northland road policing manager Inspector Clifford Paxton said the cyclist died on State Highway 14 near Maungatapere, west of Whangarei, at about 9.20am.
"The vehicle involved has failed to remain and Whangarei police are wanting to locate this vehicle," Mr Paxton said.
He said it appeared both the cyclist and the vehicle were heading in an easterly direction.
Mr Paxton said police wanted to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or knew of a vehicle that may have been involved.
He said the vehicle was likely to have damage to its frontal area and possibly the windscreen.
