A man is in an induced coma at Wellington Hospital after the car he was travelling in collided with a train.
The crash happened on State Highway 1 at Grovetown, 5km north of Blenheim just after 5pm yesterday.
The car was going over a railway crossing - which had no barrier arms, only warning lights - when it collided with the north-bound train.
The Fire Service used the jaws of life to cut two men from the vehicle.
The 17-year-old driver was taken to Blenheim's Wairau Hospital with moderate injuries, while his 18-year-old passenger was flown by helicopter to Wellington Hospital.
Police said this morning he had suffered a severe head injury and was currently in an induced coma. He was in a critical but stable condition.
The incident is being investigated further by Police and the Rail Transport Accident Investigation Commission.
