Police have named the Palmerston North man killed in a quad bike accident on a beach yesterday.
He was Luke James Randle, aged 20.
Randle was killed and another 20-year-old man was injured after a quad bike accident about 1.30am on a remote part of Scotts Ferry beach, 44km from Palmerston North.
The men were coming back from fishing when the quad bike they were on hit a bit of driftwood on the beach and flipped, Bulls chief fire officer Brian Carter said yesterday.
Friends who had been fishing with the men were following them in a four wheel drive and came across the crash moments after it had happened, Police central communications inspector Ken Climo said.
Emergency services took the injured man to hospital. A Palmerston North Hospital spokeswoman said he had been transferred to a ward and was in a stable condition.
Also yesterday a 21-year-old Palmerston North man was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was on crashed into a traffic island at the intersection of State Highway 56 and Carey Street in Longburn about 11.30pm.
The man was in the intensive care unit at Palmerston North Hospital this morning with serious orthopaedic injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.
