Dog owners flee Upper Hutt park after dog bites child, 5
Owners of a vicious dog have fled after the dog bit a five-year-old boy in Upper Hutt.
Rik Bryant, of Ponatahi, in South Wairarapa, said his son, Liam, was rushed to hospital after being bitten on the upper arm by a pitbull in Kaitoke Regional Park, Upper Hutt.
The family was at a child's birthday party when Liam approached a group of strangers walking their dogs. He patted one of their two great danes, but when he went to pat the pitbull, it attacked. "A couple of inches more and it would have taken a chunk of his arm away," his father said.
Liam screamed and his family quickly gathered around to help but the group with the dogs left the scene without leaving any contact details.
The youngster was taken to Hutt Hospital and while puncture wounds in his arm were deemed not serious, Bryant was angry at the dog's owners.
"They obviously knew the dog was going to be a problem. I have no comprehension of why it wasn't muzzled."
