Paralympian gets massive welcome back to school

Not many 15-year-olds would say they enjoyed their first day back at school, but for Paralympic champion and world record-holder Sophie Pascoe, yesterday was one school day she will never forget.
Sophie, who captured Kiwi hearts by winning three gold medals and one silver in swimming events at the Beijing Paralympics last month, returned to Lincoln High School yesterday but not without a fuss.
More than 1500 people gathered on the school's main field to recognise Sophie's outstanding achievements.
The celebrations included a remake of Kiwi band Goodshirt's song Sophie, performed by three of Sophie's friends, and a haka by the first 15 rugby team.
Before Sophie walked on to the stage, Mexican waves and chants made their way across the school grounds.
Sophie struggled to keep her emotions in check when the Mitsubishi Outlander VRX she won after being voted New Zealand's favourite Paralympian was driven through the crowd towards its new owner.
"This is a huge bonus and it's very exciting. I am blown away," she said.
Sophie's mentor, 1990 Commonwealth Games swimming gold medallist Anna Simcic, said hard work helped Sophie achieve her goals.
