A man allegedly attacked by three others in the Wairarapa last week has died in hospital.
Paul Richard Bernard Irons, 36, of Featherston, was found lying in a park at the southern end of his hometown about 7am on October 9. He died in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit at 7pm last night.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell - officer in charge of what is now a homicide investigation - said police, family and medical staff had initially been optimistic that Mr Irons' condition would improve.
"Tragically there has been no improvement and life support was withdrawn on Tuesday afternoon," he said.
Up to 30 police and specialist staff worked on the inquiry over the first few days; a team of 10 remains on the case. An autopsy will be held later today.
Meanwhile, three people arrested last Friday night and charged with assault, are to reappear in court today. They are aged 15, 17 and 25.
"We will await the outcome of the post mortem and seek advice from the Crown Solicitor before deciding exactly what further serious charges will be laid," Mr Borrell said.
