A 72-year-old man from Adelaide, Australia is dead after a car crashed into the Manakaiua River bridge on the West Coast and then went into the river.
Senior Sergeant Tim Crawford, of West Coast police, said it appeared the man’s car had collided with the entrance to a single lane bridge on State Highway 6 between Haast and Franz Josef.
The accident was discovered by a passing motorist about midnight. The dead man was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Crawford said road conditions at the time were wet, but not icy.
Police have not yet named the dead man. They have referred the death to the Coroner.
