Dunedin police are rushing to the scenes of multiple road crashes caused by severe black ice this morning.

Sergeant Dave Scott said officers have gone out to at least six crashes between the northern township of Waikouaiti and southern Mosgiel, a stretch of about 75km.

It was too early to say how bad the crashes were.

One woman had been taken to Dunedin Hospital but officers had not yet reported back on the injury status of crash victims.

Scott said the roads around the Otago city were treacherous this morning, with rain that fell overnight freezing in the early hours.
