Distraught voters call the cops

Some voters distraught by election night results resorted to calling police, with one man ringing a counselling hotline and then 111.

Spooked beneficiaries also rang a Government family helpline because they were "stressed" their payments would change.

A Wairarapa man was so upset by National's crushing win he reached out to Youthline and then called the police emergency number.

Constable Ray Matthews said the call was forwarded by the police communications centre to the Masterton station.

"Among other things, he was concerned about the way the election result was panning out and how that would impact on his future. We basically talked to him and worked through some issues."

The call was one of several fielded by police as the early results on Saturday night pointed to a National victory.

A police communications spokeswoman confirmed there were other calls about the election on the night, and the impact results were having on people's moods.

Most callers just needed reassurance, while others were referred to counselling agencies, she said.

For other helpline operators, the phones were busy from late Saturday night and throughout Sunday. Lifeline said there was a marked increase in calls from people burdened by financial woes, though financial concerns had been a major issue for many callers during the past year.

An operator for the Government's family services hotline said most calls came on Sunday.

"Most were really worried about what the change of government would mean for their benefit payments. There was real distress and uncertainty for some. It was quite heartbreaking and there were no answers to give them."

Callers were told to contact Work and Income to discuss their individual needs when offices opened yesterday.

National has pledged not to cut benefits and to pass legislation enshrining annual benefit rate rises.

.......and our dollar isnt worth anything, wages are low, tax is high ,we're over run by migrants but can't migrate anywhere easily, there is a crime wave going on at the moment, it costs more for us to holiday here than people from elsewhere, our meat and cheese is cheaper in other countries than it is here, baby boomers retiring will create a new crisis after this crisis is over, public transport is terrible and its becoming more and more unviable to be driving everywhere, education and healthcare are becoming to expensive.................. theres a good possibility people who don't work just because they don't have to are the least of our worries.

in response to #116

if those people are still on an unemployment benefit 10years later then the comments people are making here are exactly appropriate.

This is not that same government, some people dont seem to realise that.

Many of the Randite Gumbies here seem sufficiently heartless and sociopathic that only the slightest change in circumstances would see them in prison for some violent crime.

Cutting benefits is just an easy way of cutting wages, since people are more willing to accept working for crap wages in a sort of shoe factory if loss of the job means a death sentence. The desire for cheap slaves is why the Business Round Table strive in _increase_ unemployment.

It would be more economical to give everyone, rich or poor, a living wage. Apart from being easy to administer, this scheme would stimulate the local economy because poor people often can't save money very well. It would also allow the creation of many more businesses because the cost of failure only means a lack of luxuries.

Yeah, I know the Gumbies won't like it.

Good on them for having those concerns. Many people are on benefits through no fault of their own. Some of those who have responded should'nt throw stones co's they or their nearest and deatest might end up on a benefit one day.

Guess we should all flock to your world where relationships always work out, people don't make mistakes and all babies don't take three years to reach kindergarten age. If you've voted national, you realize John key was raised by a single mother in a state house?

Some of these comments are really ignorant. There's this hive mentality that unemployed people on the dole sit at home watching sky TV or smoke pot. With the dole you could buy some baked beans, sausages, pay for your electricy and bus fare. You've only got enough money to exist. Living on baked beans which are loaded with sugar and sausages will make your body lethargic and lazy. Not enough money for fruit or veges. After staying this way for six months with nutritional deficiencies having a sluggish depressed mind, it can be really hard getting a proper job.

As Dave's said(funny that, my name's Dave too) I'd like to call Stuff out on being aware that these bitter comments would be made at struggling people. I also wish they explained what reason the guy had about why he might be afraid, not that it was just a change of government but giving a bit of national's history. But wait a second, where's the fun in providing all the facts?

WELL MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD THINK TWICE ABOUT HAVING KIDS IF THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO SUPPORT THEM THEMSELVES WITHOUT RELYING ON THE GOVERNMENT/TAXPAYER!! But thats another topic.

hear hear :)

all you self centred morons should cheer the hell up! Stop judging people before you even know them or have even spent one second considering their situation!!! this forum of postings has disgusted me, no wonder such 'large' numbers of people are leaving when you lot are a representation of our citizens!!

Stuff, you should be ashamed as well, for allowing comments when you are aware that this level of vitriol would be levelled at people.

I hope none of you take my comments out of context.

@ Al - get back in your box before you embarass the right any further. It does NOT do you any favours to be anti-democracy.

I'm assuming you'll refuse to your govt support when you hit the big six-five. And if your right wing bullsh*t finally rots your brain and you're unable to do anything but blubber in a corner, I expect you to allow us to watch you and laugh. Geez.

No system is perfect. It's better to have welfare than not have it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either heartless or brainless. If you don't like how our country works (I love New Zealand, but I know you guys are quite into the "NZ Sucks" message) you can exercise your right to eff off.

Pull your redneck heads in, how do you know they weren't the elderly or mentally ill sickness beneficiaries. Oh that's right we'll start up Health Camps for them called the final solution..

There's always an airport not too far away and if by chance yr from the UK then you should be use to it.

These people are calling 111 because they think their benefit is going to be cut??? How about they actually read (assuming they can as I wouldn't want to judge) up on Nat's policy on the benefits (again assuming that nothing else is worrying them).

I agree there are some people out there that qualify and do need it to keep their heads above water but you also have to agree that when you see alot, and I mean alot, of young able bodied men on the dole or girls/women droping kids like there's no tomorrow without wanting to better themselves it will wear thin with any tax payer.

I hope that the dole/benefit fraudsters/bludgers are worried because it's time they got off their lazy no good for nothing butts and looked for a job or study to increase their job scope!!!
