A man was arrested today after threatening to shoot two staff members at a school in Christchurch.

Papanui police Sergeant Jason Stewart said the 41-year-old man went on to the school grounds at Wainoni Primary School at 2.15pm and made threats to shoot two staff members.

Staff went immediately into a lockdown procedure for the safety of their children, said Mr Stewart.

Police found the man on school grounds carrying a bag, but he did not have a firearm with him.

The man would be appearing in Christchurch District Court tomorrow charged with two counts of threatening to kill, possession of cannabis and breach of bail.

Mr Stewart said the incident was treated very serious by police because of recent overseas cases.

However, this matter appeared to be domestic related involving access to children, he said.
