Laser-kiwi artist uninspired by flag designs
The designer behind the laser-kiwi flag has called the final four flag options "uninspired".
Auckland audio-visual technician James Gray, 26, said the designs didn't derive much meaning for him.
"They just seem a bit deathly and uninspired to me," he said.
"Tad disappointing that we still seem to be stuck on the union jack colours. I would have liked it if they went in another direction."
Gray's Fire the Lazar garnered a lot of international attention and was the popular pick among a range of entertaining crowd-sourced submissions.
He described his flag's fame as "a bit of a sideshow".

The final selection looked like far more sincere than his, and he said he would pick Kyle Lockwood's flag with the black on it if he had to choose.
"I think these people actually take their artwork seriously."
His kiwi shooting green laser beams out of its eyes was just a "random inspiration" mocked up in Microsoft Paint one night, he said.
"You look at Australia, they've got all sorts of deadly animals," he explained.
"We don't even have one. I thought it was about time we had one."
While Gray thought $26 million spent on the flag process was a lot of money, the flag change would happen some day.
"If I were prime minister I'd probably have other priorities," said Gray.
"[But] the flag change is going to happen one way or another eventually."
So what happens to New Zealand's official shipping flag? Can we have a laser Kiwi wearing a pirate hat for those? #nzflag— Magenta Gutenberg (@SnapperQuota) August 31, 2015
#nzflag options... lol. Even laser beam kiwi would have been better.— Julia Claire (@JuliaCNicholson) August 31, 2015
People would have objected to laser kiwi because it was a joke but at least it would have been a funny joke.— An Average Tweeter (@MrSnrubNZ) August 31, 2015
