The man who allegedly shot at a police officer in downtown Auckland last month, leaving him with bullet grazes, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court today.

Murray Toleafoa is charged with attempted murder and an alternative charge of using a firearm in relation to the June 1 incident on Mayoral Dr.

He appeared in the Auckland District Court this afternoon and will re-appear later this month before a post committal conference on August 16.

Police will file submissions at his next hearing.

Crown prosecutor Simon Moore said there was "a great deal more work that needs to be undertaken by police to take this right to committal".

A relaxed looking Toleafoa was dressed tidily in a blue shirt, with a trimmed beard and closely cropped hair.

Toleafoa was arrested at a central Auckland supermarket on June 6 along with two associates.

The 20-year-old woman allegedly driving the car when the alleged shooting occurred, Nadia Ball, is facing a charge of being a party to unlawful possession of a pistol.

During the incident a bullet, fired from a pistol similar to a police Glock, narrowly missed the police officer before hitting a concrete wall across the road.

The officer sustained a gunshot burn to his forearm.
