Two dead as car and ute collide

Two people are dead after a crash between a car and a ute around 6.30am on State Highway 2 at Nukuhou between Whakatane and Opotiki.

Fire Service northerrn communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the two dead people had been travelling in the car.

A person from the ute was in a serious condition and was being taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance.

The road is completely blocked and diversions are in place at the Taneatua Squash Club near the Pikatahi Bridge, and at Wainui Road at the junction with State Highway 2.

Police advise diversions will be in place for some time.
