A freight train has derailed in Hamilton this morning.
The container train hauling 30 wagons from Tauranga derailed at about 6.30am, resulting in two wagons tipped on their side and left three leaning over in the Frankton rail yard.
One man who saw the result from the Frankton overbridge and heard the derailment said it created a huge noise.
"It sounded like an earthquake, but I thought we didn't have them in Hamilton.''
KiwiRail communcations manager Kimberley Brady said no-one was injured in the incident and the cause was unlikely to be known until the toppled freight wagons could be lifted and the condition of the rails seen.
"We are waiting to recover the wagons and check the rails.''
