A fisherman who was reported missing tonight has been found after his boat was washed up on rocks on the West Coast, police say.
A helicopter scouring a rugged section of the coastline recovered the fisherman, who was reported overdue about 6pm today.
A police spokesperson said the man’s boat got caught by a rogue wave and was wrecked on the rocks. The man made it to the shore and was spotted by a helicopter crew about 8.45pm.
The fisherman's partner contacted police after he left Little Wanganui about midday in a 4.2 metre Ospray boat and failed to return when he was expected home about two hours later.
Search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Sean Judd, of Westport police, said weather in the area had been good and the sea was calm, however it was very cold.
