Two people - a woman and a toddler - have been flown by rescue helicopter to Taranaki Base Hospital after the people-mover they were in hit ice and rolled in the Uruti Valley north of New Plymouth this morning.

A total of eight people were in the vehicle when it slid off SH3, rolled down a bank, and ended upside-down in a swamp shortly after 7am.

The woman and toddler were hospitalised as a precaution, authorities said.

This is the second serious crash in Taranaki's far north in the last few days.

On Sunday two people had to be airlifted to hospital when their car hit ice and rolled just north of the Mokau River bridge. One suffered serious back injuries.
