Two members of a tramping party stuck in the Taraua Range have been rescued from the bush, but two remain trapped by injury and bad weather.
The party was facing a third night in the bush due to bad weather hampering rescue efforts.
A 50-year-old man who was tramping with his daughter, 16, and two of her friends has injured his knee and is unable to walk out. His daughter has injured her foot and is also unable to walk.
Land search and rescue staff reached the party this afternoon and walked the two friends out about 4.30pm.
"The girls were wet and tired but OK," Senior Constable Mike Tate, from Levin Police Search and Rescue, said in a statement this evening.
"The remaining two are warm and in good spirits, they have supplies for several more days," he added.
The weather in the area was poor tonight but forecast to improve tomorrow when an attempt would be made to fly to the hut and bring the remaining two out.
Mr Tate said the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter could not reach the hut yesterday morning because of wind, rain and cloud cover.
The group had earlier walked from Mangahao Dam to the Te Matawai Hut. The hut is one day's walk east of Levin.
