Hastings toddler in critical condition after alleged home assault
A Hastings toddler is fighting for his life after an alleged assault in the suburb of Flaxmere.
Police were called to the 2½-year-old boy's home about midday on Monday.
The toddler was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition with head injuries and was being treated in the intensive care unit, police said.
On Tuesday, police and forensic staff remained at the house where the alleged assault took place.
A 17-year-old male appeared in Hastings District Court on Tuesday afternoon charged with assaulting a child.
Judge Bridget Mackintosh suppressed the teenager's name and remanded him on bail without plea until November 3.
His bail conditions include that he live with his parents at their home under a 24-hour curfew.
The teenager's parents, along with about 10 other family members and supporters, were in court for his appearance.
