Four people were taken to Auckland City Hospital after the two-car crash, which happened about 5.30am.
Police Inspector Danny Meade said the cars collided on the southern motorway exit to the northwestern motorway.
He said one of the vehicles was driving the wrong way towards the city and hit another car heading west.
Meade said no-one involved suffered life threatening injuries.
The driver heading the wrong way had been spoken to by police but Meade said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.
Traffic was backed up around Spaghetti Junction following the accident, but by 7.30am the crash scene had been cleared and traffic was flowing as normal, Meade said.
