A motorcyclist has died in hospital with his family at his side after crashing into a power pole in Paraparaumu this morning.

The 40-year-old was airlifted to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries after the accident, which happened at 8.39am on Ruapehu St.

Inspector Mike Coleman said the man died this afternoon with his family at his side.

"The motorcycle left the road and appears to have hit a power pole while the dead man was thrown into the front fence of a private house," he said.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene.

Nobody else was involved in the accident.

Police are seeking any witnesses to the crash.

The man's name has not yet been released.

The Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
