A person had to be rescued from their vehicle this evening after driving off a bank on State Highway 2 near Tauranga.
The jaws of life were used to rip open the roof of the car and rescue the driver, who was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries, fire north communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.
The car went over a bank on SH2 near Wright Rd, Aongatete, about 4.30pm.
The person's gender and age were not known but it was understood they had suffered head injuries, St John ambulance spokesman Brett Tobeck said.
No one else was believed to have been involved in the crash.
