A New Plymouth teenager broke his leg while trying to escape from police in the early hours this morning.
The 17-year-old and his girlfriend had been snapped by police breaching the city's liquor ban, near Burger King, about 2.35am.
Sergeant Royston Betteridge said the pair failed to listen to police warnings and were arrested.
However while they were waiting for a car to take them to the police station the teenager decided to make a break for freedom.
Betteridge said the teen tried to run through a construction zone between the Burger King car park and Pak 'N Save car park.
''He cleaned himself out and broke his right leg quite badly,'' he said.
The teen has been charged with breaching the liquor ban and escaping custody.
