Residents are being evacuated from a street in Tauranga, after what is believed to be a World War II hand grenade was found underneath the floorboards of a house.

Police had cordoned off Harvey Street and the bomb squad was on its way to remove the relic from the house while residents near 44 Harvey St were being evacuated.

Police said it was a "grenade fragment" which was found and it appeared to have had the detonator removed.
