Two people have suffered serious injuries in a two-car crash in Waitomo this afternoon.
The crash occurred on State Highway 3, at the junction with State Highway 4, in Te Mapara about midday, police said.
Two trapped people were freed by the Fire Service and are being flown to Waikato Hospital in serious condition.
St John Ambulance are treating another two people at the scene, one with moderate injuries and the other with minor injuries, a spokeswoman said.
The police serious crash unit are investigating. State Highway 3 will be closed until further notice.
