The discovery of ammunition on a corpse caused a bomb scare at Christchurch Hospital today.
The Defence Force said the explosive ordnance disposal squadron was called to the hospital about 10.30am after "unexpended ammunition" was found in the personal protection kit of a body in the morgue.
"The items were subsequently made safe by explosive ordnance disposal personnel," a Defence Force spokeswoman said.
She would not be drawn on whether the body was one of the three soldiers killed in Afghanistan last Sunday.
The three bodies were returned to Christchurch yesterday.
"The New Zealand Defence Force will be investigating the sequence of events and processes that took place in re-patriating our deceased back to New Zealand," the spokeswoman said.
She said the Defence Force would not comment further.
Police declined to comment on the incident.
