Emergency services are searching Titahi Bay, Wellington, after report of a person tipping out of a kayak.

Senior Sergeant David Houston said Coastguard, police and a helicopter were searching Titahi Bay after a member of the public reported the incident about 10am.

"At this stage it looks like it might be a lump of drift wood with some mooring buoys on it. [However] the person's pretty adamant it was a kayaker."

The search was continuing, Houston said.
