Road toll rises to 11 following death of man after Rotorua crash

Eleven people have died on New Zealand roads this holiday period.

By 4pm Monday, the national road toll for the holiday period was understood to have risen to 11, following the death of a man who was injured in a crash on Sunday afternoon on State Highway 33 at Mourea, near Rotorua, police said. 

"One person from that crash passed away late [Sunday] night about midnight," Bay of Plenty Senior Sergeant Mike Membery said.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and died later in hospital.

He was a man in his late 60s, Membery said.

Three others suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened about 4pm on Sunday when a car went into a ditch.

The holiday period officially ends at 6am on Tuesday.

Fourteen people died in the holiday period over the 2014/15 season.
