Police are investigating one of the fatal crashes.

Police have released the names of the three people who died in separate car crashes in the Bay of Plenty and Central Hawke's Bay on Sunday.

Stevie Rangataua-Alexander, 18, from Auckland, died at the scene of a two-car crash on State Highway 1 north of Taupo at 1pm.

Rangataua-Alexander was the driver of one of the vehicles. Her death has been referred to the Coroner.

The teenager's cousin asked for privacy from the media.

Rangataua-Alexander's relative also asked that photos of her cousin were not used.

Three hours later, Monty Broughton, 68, of Taupo was killed in a single vehicle crash on SH33 near Rotorua.

Broughton was a passenger in the vehicle. The crash is being investigated by police.

Later that evening, at 7.30, a crash on SH2 near Waipawa claimed the life of Bradley Charles Dobby, 20, from central Hawke's Bay.
