Emergency services evacuated two central Wellington high-rise buildings after a suspicious package was found.

Boulcott House in Boulcott St - housing the Internal Affairs department and Southern Cross - was evacuated about 11.30am and the neighbouring Compudigm House was cleared about 15 minutes later. A section of the street was closed.

Staff were allowed back inside and the road was reopened about 12.15pm after the police Specialist Search Group established there was no threat.

Emergency services would not say what was in the package, which had been delivered by courier to the Internal Affairs department.

Acting sergeant Dave Bealing said the package was unidentified and had not been expected by the department. It was a small polystyrene container
