A missing female hitch-hiker has made contact with Christchurch police.
Detective Phil McDonnell says the woman telephoned police shortly after midday today.
"The woman was picked up at Little River yesterday evening and given a ride to Akaroa where she spent the night," he says.
"We're quite satisfied she is safe and well and we do not have any further concerns for her safety or wellbeing."
At least 30 calls were received from members of the public reporting sightings of the woman, he said.
Officers appealed for information on the tourist early today, but had refused to reveal their reasons why.
