The family of a 15-year-old Feilding girl who has been missing since yesterday has spoken out, saying they fear for  her safety and want her home.

Jamie Beardsmore went missing yesterday morning from the Feilding area.

Her father Shaun Beardsmore said he last saw her when she left their Seddon St home at about 8.30am.

''She left to take her brother to school. He got there, but she has been missing since.''

His daughter had a history of running away from home, and might be trying to get to her mother's place in Christchurch.

''I went to the ferry terminal in Wellington last night, as she could be possibly heading in that direction.''

Mr Beardsmore's partner, Lenore Beck, said Jamie had managed to travel long distances before when running away.

''She's gone from Christchurch to Timaru before, and from here to Whanganui,'' Ms Beck said.

Extended family had been in touch and were also concerned about Jamie's safety.

Ms Beck said when Feilding High School contacted her at work to say Jamie had not turned up to class, she thought the teenager might have just walked home to wag school.

Jamie appears to have returned home as money and a blanket are missing, Ms Beck said.

The family just wanted to know she was safe and unharmed, she said.

Feilding police Sergeant Grant Lawton said officers were talking to Jamie's friends from school, as well as her mother.

They had also contacted places where the girl had run away to before, but had had no luck so far.

''We're quickly running out of avenues," Mr Lawton said.

Mr Lawton would not reveal why police were concerned about the teenager - ''we just want to find her,'' he said.

"It's her behaviour that is really worrying us at the moment.''

Jamie is described as European, with shoulder-length blonde hair and a petite frame.

She was possibly carrying a blue mink blanket with dolphins on it, and could have been wearing black school shoes, black trackpants and a black Angry Birds hoodie.

Her small frame made her look much younger than 15.

Mr Lawton said it was strange Jamie took a blanket.

''It could mean she knew it was going to be cold and needed to keep warm. We are still trying to find all those answers,'' he said.

"Given the concerns we have for her health and her age, we are seeking information from members of the public who may have seen Jamie over the past 24 hours."
