A 55-year-old man is dead and four other people, including a six-year-old girl, are injured after a serious two-car crash near Tauranga this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 2 near Te Mete Road in Te Puna, 6km from Tauranga, about 12.15pm.
Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders, of Tauranga police, said it appeared the man's vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction, Saunders said.
The man was the sole occupant of a vehicle. His details would not be released until next of kin have been notified.
Saunders said a family of four was in the second vehicle.
Two girls, aged six and 15, were taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries, while the two others were treated for minor injuries at the scene, St John Ambulance spokesman Norman Ngatai said.
State Highway 2 was closed and diversions were in place.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area.
