State Highway One between Waiouru and Taihape is closed tonight following a large slip which covered the road between the two central North Island towns.
The slip occurred at Hihitahi about 10 kms south of Waiouru and 18 kms north of Taihape.
Local resident Andrea Spicer said she was cooking dinner at her rural Hihitahi homestead when she saw a vehicle do a u-turn on the highway.
"A truck came along and just ploughed in to the slip which is covering both sides of the road," Spicer said.
The slip occurred about 7pm and Spicer said, based on the digger's current progress, she expected it would be at least two hours before the highway reopened.
