Six people have been injured in a head-on crash on the Coromandel Peninsula.

St John Ambulance confirmed three suffered serious injuries, while three others suffered moderate injuries after the crash just south of Whitianga.

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Mill Creek Rd, just south of Whitianga, about 2.40pm.

Senior Sergeant Graham Shields said a car carrying five people was travelling north, while a car with a female driver was heading south when they collided.

The woman and two of the occupants in the other car were trapped and seriously injured.

Two have since been airlifted to Waikato hospital by the Westpac Auckland Rescue Helicopter, while the woman was being taken to a nearby school before also being flown out.

The remaining injured have been taken to Thames hospital by ambulance.

Shields said one lane of the road had since reopened after the crash, but one of the cars was still blocking the other lane.

With Whitianga's Scallop Festival being held on Saturday, along with forecast wet weather, Shields urged motorists to take care on the roads.

"It's going to be a busy weekend on the roads with the festival and we've always got things in place to help keep people safe, and it's a shame there has been a crash already."
