A few of the forecast thunderstorms could become severe, with localised rainfall rates of 25 to 40mm an hour.

Hot weather in the central North Island has sparked thunderstorms and heavy showers, but a warning of severe thunderstorms has been called off MetService says.

Some of the slow-moving showers had produced severe brief downpours of 25mm an hour, MetService spokesperson Paul Mallinson said.

Thunderstorms had been expected to move towards the central plateau going into Saturday evening, and then dissipate mid to late evening.
