The death of a woman who fell from a building in Wellington is not being treated as suspicious.

The woman, believed to be in her 20s, fell from the Internal Affairs building in central Wellington.

Emergency services this morning cordoned off Waring Taylor Street and the nearby part of Lambton Quay while they investigated and spoke to witnesses.

Nearby cafe Gloria Jeans was closed.

Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel confirmed several people had witnessed the incident, including cafe patrons eating their breakfast.

"We've got some very traumatised members of the public," Mr van den Heuvel said.

He said police were not yet sure which floor the woman fell from.

Brandon Walker was on the street when the woman fell.

''I turned around the girl was lying on the pavement," he said.

Nigel Lock was in a building opposite the incident when he heard a loud bang and "a whole lot of screaming" on the street.

Police said the death was not suspicious and would be referred to the coroner.
