A 7-year-old girl has been run over and killed near the Canterbury township of Twizel.
Timaru police understand the young girl’s father was driving the vehicle.
The incident happened about noon today on the outskirts of the Twizel township. The girl’s father telephoned police to report the incident.
Mid-South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said the matter had been referred to the coroner.
Police would not say if the death was the result of a farm accident, if it happened on a road, or if it involved a recreational vehicle.
Gaskin said he ‘‘was not at liberty’’ to give out any information.
Senior Constable Russell Halkett, of Fairlie, said the family did not want to release any details on the matter.
St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the girl died at the scene.
‘‘Apparently people at the scene were doing CPR on her and our crews obviously treated her and did their best ... but unfortunately she was deceased at the scene.’’
