One person has died and two others were seriously injured following a car crash in the Coromandel.
The two-car crash happened on the Kopu-Hikuai Road, in the Thames-Coromandel district, shortly before 3pm.
Fire communications shift manager Steve Smith said one person had died and two others were trapped and had to be cut free.
A St John spokeswoman said there were two people with serious injuries and another with moderate injuries.
Two rescue helicopters were dispatched from Auckland to take the injured to hospital.
The Kopu-Hikuai Road, State Highway 25a has closed and traffic is being diverted through Whangamata, creating a lengthy detour for northbound motorists.
The road is expected to be busy with hundreds of people returning home from yesterday's Whitianga Scallop Festival.
