Police saved a man who jumped nearly 30m from Auckland’s Mangere Bridge this afternoon.

A police Northern Communications spokesman said the man jumped from the road bridge and was injured.

"A couple of young cops from Mangere jumped in and dragged him to safety," the spokesman said.

Police were reported to have saved him by commandeering a waka that was being used nearby.

The two officers swam out and helped manoeuvre the man into the waka where he was rowed ashore and taken to hospital.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
