One dead after Dargaville van crash

An elderly woman has been killed and a number of other people are injured after a van veered off the road near Dargaville.

Ten people were in the van when it failed to take a right hand bend on State Highway 14, 3km north of Dargaville, about 4.20pm today.

A passenger, who was aged in her 70s, died at the scene.

Eight other elderly passengers, some of whom received minor injuries,  were taken to Dargaville Hospital to be assessed, ambulance communications spokesman Brett Tobeck said.

The driver of the van was not injured, police said.

The van was heading south towards Dargaville when it veered off the road and landed in a ditch, police said.

The road was blocked for more than two hours after the crash.

Police serious crash investigators were speaking to witnesses and mapping the scene in an attempt to ascertain the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, a man has died after being hit by a vehicle in Nelson tonight.

Police said the crash happened soon after 7pm at the intersection of Trafalgar St and Queen Elizabeth II Dr.

Constable Adrian Cupit, of Nelson police, said a 56-year-old Nelson man had died following the crash.

No further details were immediately available.
