Motorcyclist killed in Christchurch crash

A young male motorcyclist is dead after straying into the wrong lane on a motorway and colliding with a car tonight, police say.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the  crash on the Christchurch Southern Motorway (SH73) close to the Lincoln Rd over-bridge in Addington about 8pm.

A police statement said the motorcyclist, who was travelling east, hit the oncoming car and died.

Canterbury road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart told The Press the crash involved a four-wheel-drive and a moped.

''Initial indications are the moped was on the wrong side of the road - possibly thought it was two lanes instead of one lane both ways - but it's early in the investigation.''

He said the deceased was a man in his late teens, or early 20s.

''Witness are saying the moped appeared to veer across the road into the front of the four-wheel-drive.''

The police serious crash unit were at the scene and parts of the motorway were closed after the crash.

Police said they were in the process of notifying the man's next of kin.

A power outage in Addington tonight is believed to be unrelated to the crash, an Orion spokeswoman told The Press.
