An eight-year-old girl who fell four metres off a balcony and landed on her face had to be flown to Middlemore Hospital for specialist trauma care overnight.
The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance had been dispatched on a mission to Thames but was redirected to Whakatane when news of the girl's fall came in.
She had several fractures to her face and jaw, and was transferred to Middlemore Hospital for specialist trauma care.
The accident happened in Ohope during a camp at the local marae. The girl was accompanied on the hospital flight by her father.
