An elderly woman is dead after being hit by a car reversing out of a driveway in Tauranga today.
The 84-year-old had been walking along the footpath on Windsor Rd in the suburb of Bellevue when the car struck her around 11.15am.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the woman fell on her back and suffered fatal injuries. She died at the scene.
The 33-year-old female driver was co-operating with police.
Campion said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.
"The investigation starts from now. We still have to survey the scene, interview witnesses formally," he said.
"In a situation like this we wouldn't be in a position to say what the outcome of the crash will be for at least three to four weeks."
Campion said the family of the elderly woman had been notified, and she was likely to be named by police tomorrow.
